I recently watched the movie Please Give, which is mainly about a character played by Catherine Keener, but Elizabeth Keener has a small role in a couple scenes. I was just wondering if anyone in the casting department ever asked at any point, "Hey, do you think this will be confusing at all? These two ladies look A LOT alike."
Well, in case anyone did ask, let me answer: "YES, I was totally confused for at least thirty seconds or so." See, in the first scene there is this character Rebecca who works in a medical office with a character played by Elizabeth Keener. Then a few minutes later she is in an apartment building elevator with Catherine Keener, and they have this awkward conversation about the weather where Rebecca says, "Well I work indoors so I don't know anything about this weather you speak of" or something like that, and I kept thinking "BUT YOU GUYS WORK TOGETHER! I JUST SAW IT!!!" Then I slowly figured out what was going on here.
I mean, listen, I'm pretty bad at following movies sometimes, and maybe probably this was not a problem for anyone else ever. I'm not saying it ruined the movie. I'm just saying that no amount of suspension of disbelief can make those Keeners just two strangers in the same city as opposed to two PEOPLE WHO ARE MOST DEFINITELY RELATED. Take note, casting directors.
